Reusing a course

How to duplicate an existing OneTutor course for a new semester – what gets carried over, what stays with the old course, and what to consider beforehand.

Written by Nicolas Ebner

💡 A new semester is coming up? You don't need to rebuild your course. The recommendation is to duplicate your existing course.

Why duplicate a course?

When you duplicate a course, all content and descriptions are reused, while learner data stays with the existing course.

  • Content is preserved: materials, quiz questions, the course description and settings don't have to be created again.

  • Clean separation between cohorts: chats, quiz results and feedback from the last semester stay in the old course.

  • Learners keep their access: participants from the last cohort can always revisit their earlier OneTutor course.

  • Comparable statistics: you can easily compare usage from semester to semester.

Before duplicating: improve your course

Usage and learner data are not copied into the new course. It is therefore worth taking a close look at the existing course first.

  • Analyse usage patterns in the dashboard: which topics were asked about most? Where were the gaps in understanding?

  • Revise or delete weak or negatively rated quiz questions.

  • Add missing materials or replace outdated ones.

☝🏻 Improve your course before you duplicate it — that way the new cohort benefits right away. For how to evaluate usage, see: Analytics & Course Improvement

How to duplicate a course

Duplicating is simple and takes just a few clicks. There are two ways to do it:

When creating a new course

  1. In your course overview, click the plus symbol (+) to create a new course.

  2. Choose the option to create a course from an existing course.

  3. In the basic settings, select the existing course you want to duplicate.

From the course settings

For convenience, you can also duplicate a course directly from the course settings of the existing course.

What gets duplicated?

Copied automatically

  • Course description

  • Course settings (e.g. language, answer strictness, additional instructions for the chat)

Selectable while duplicating

  • Quiz questions: copy over all existing questions

  • Materials: take over the existing learning materials and supporting resources

  • Course managers: bring the existing course team along

Configurable while duplicating

  • Semester: if your institution has semester management activated, you can set which semester the new course should appear in.

  • Password: you can set a new password for the new course.

Not copied

  • Learner and usage data (chat history, quiz results, feedback and statistics) stays with the existing course.

After duplicating

You can always adjust all information afterwards: delete individual questions, replace materials or change settings — exactly as your new cohort needs it.

Share the new course link

The duplicated course has a new link. Copy it via "Share Course" and share it with your learners, for example through Moodle.

⚠️ Note: the old link still points to the previous course. Make sure to update the link in your LMS. More on this: Sharing your course, visibility & security
