OneTutor Moodle Integration: Step-by-Step Guide (Instructor)

Detailed step-by-step instructions for instructors

Written by Tobias Maier

Prerequisite: You have already created a course in OneTutor, uploaded content, and logged in to OneTutor at least once. Without an existing course with content, the linking process will show "No courses found".

Step 1: Enable editing mode

  1. Open your Moodle course.

  2. Click "Turn editing on" in the top right corner.

Step 2: Add OneTutor as an activity

  1. In the desired section, click "Add an activity or resource".

  2. Select "OneTutor" from the list and confirm.

Note: If OneTutor doesn't appear in the list: Go to More → LTI External Tools → Activate OneTutor, then repeat Step 2.

Step 3: Link your OneTutor course

A setup screen will open. You only need to fill in a few fields:

  1. Click "Select content".

  2. A window opens showing all your OneTutor courses (as owner or course manager).

  3. Select the appropriate OneTutor course.

  4. Choose the desired interaction type (e.g. Chat or Quiz).

  5. Click "Embed". All remaining fields will be filled in automatically.

An entire OneTutor course is embedded as a single activity. Learners find the chat, quizzes and all other features in it.

Step 4: Review settings and save

Important: The "Custom parameters" field is filled in automatically. Never edit or delete this field, doing so will break the connection and require a full re-setup.

Display format (optional):

  • "Embedded without blocks" (recommended): OneTutor appears directly inside the Moodle course.

  • "New window": OneTutor opens in a separate tab. This may be blocked by popup blockers.

  1. Optional: Add a short description for the activity.

  2. Click "Save and display".

What happens for learners?

Learners don't need to set anything up. On their first click on the OneTutor activity in Moodle:

  1. They are asked to link their Moodle account with OneTutor once (one click).

  2. They are automatically enrolled in the corresponding OneTutor course.

  3. From then on, they can use OneTutor directly from Moodle.

Anyone who has never used OneTutor and uses the course link or QR code outside of Moodle is first guided to enroll in the course.

In Moodle, instructors see the learner view. A small button opens the full app (learners) or "Manage course" (course managers). In the "Share course" dialog, instructors get an explanation of the setup in the LMS if LTI is already connected.

Privacy: OneTutor does not receive learners' real names. The integration works pseudonymously.
